In 1973, Richard Novak, Doug Haut and Jay Shuirman, three surfer friends from Santa Cruz, California, teamed up to found NHS Inc. At first, their surfboard brand business was struggling to stay afloat because the margins were low. But suddenly, a friend from a Hawaiian company challenged the NHS to make 500 skateboards. The first ever Santa Cruz skateboard was produced in 1973. From that point on, the company has become a symbol of skateboarding culture. Santa Cruz is known for two very iconic logos: the Red Dot logo and the Screaming Hand logo. The Red Dot was the first logo Santa Cruz ever released, designed by Jay Shuirman and Jim Phillips. Shortly after the Screaming Hand always designed by Jim Phillips saw the light and became as iconic and legendary as the original logo. Santa Cruz wouldn't be the iconic skate brand it is today without Jim Phillips artwork. Jim was one of the first to introduce real works of art and put them on everyone's tables.
